Geocachers: GPS Shopping

GPS recommendations from Up North guys in-the-know.

When we asked for GPS recommendations, our experts unanimously endorsed Garmin units. Here are their three suggestions at different price points:

Garmin eTrex H: $100. No maps on screen, but an arrow will point you in the direction of the geocache coordinates you plug in. Pack paper county maps for ground info. Bare bones, but solid gear.

Garmin eTrex Summit: $249. New high-sensitivity receiver and nice set of maps on the color screen. Car charger, case. Best GPS value right now, says Jonathan Sheridan, Traverse City Gander Mountain’s GPS expert.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX: $400. Great screen, lots of memory for detailed maps and smart user interface. The choice of many hard-core geocachers.
