Northern Michigan certainly has its share of characters, and its own unique pop culture too. Here area few of our favorite iconic Up North characters—some local, some intergalactic.
Marge Simpson: It comes—sweet, scratchy, unmistakable—from behind you at the deli. The voice of Bart’s mom, actress Julie Kavner, summers on a lake near Traverse City.
Darth Vader: The brilliant basso of James Earl Jones was nearly mute until his high school teacher in Brethren made him recite a poem about grapefruit in class.
Cherry Jerry: Since 1922 the boy has lorded over Honor’s Cherry Hut, having his perma-grin cut into the tops of pies as an escape for bubbling fruit.

Shirley: The ice cream beauty at T.C.’s The Dairy Lodge is back to her (blond) roots, 50 and lovin’ it.
