Alice’s Kandy Korn Caramel Chews! Alice was responsible for the first-ever candy shop in Mackinaw City, now run by Chuck and Ginny Brew. Alice’s Caramel Chews leave a sweet taste in my mouth long after I’ve gone back East. In past years, I’ve spread the sugar and given out Caramel Chews to my friends across the country for the holidays.

Both the waist [Midwest style] and the bib aprons [East Coast style] have a place in my kitchen. I love a decorative waist apron when doing the finishing touches for a party or special event, but a bib apron is my go-to gear for any all-out day in the kitchen. When it comes to buying gifts, though, I think waist aprons are always the way to go. They look great and one-size-fits-all!
When I was 11, my mom broke her leg in eleven places and was bedridden for almost a year. Each night a different neighbor would appear on our doorstep with a hot dinner in a beautiful traveling basket.—E.E.
