Love him? Hate him? We say the Oscar-winning filmmaker deserves a place tight to our Northern bosom for shining a light into our historic downtown theater—dark since the 1970’s, but now open year round—and for founding the vibrant Traverse City Film Festival (107 screenings of 71 films in summer of ’08).
We see him pouring out of a minivan on Front Street, chatting in the popcorn line (he started the free popcorn Tuesdays). Thanks to him, we watched U of M vs. Michigan State on the big screen and saw (free) live coverage of Barack Obama’s and John McCain’s nomination acceptance speeches. He lets active-duty military members and peace workers get in to films free. And how can you stay mad at a man who offers free matinees on snow days? Thanks, Mike, for a great community gathering place.—E.B.T.
