Where can a doctor or dentist turn for help when the patient in the exam room speaks no English?
Not to worry! Whether you are in the E.R. at the dark hour of 3 am or in a private office during sunlit business hours, the Medical Interpretation Team at Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. (NMHSI) stands ready to help at any hour of the night or day.
Since 1968, NMHSI community clinics have specialized in providing primary care services to adults and children from over a dozen nations. Our Interpretation Team provides English-Spanish interpretation services for over 45 community based organizations, hospitals and private offices.
NMHSI’s Medical Interpreter Training curriculum and cultural competency seminars surpass the national standards on Cultural and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS).
In times of distress, pain or trauma, we humans share a universal response. Our brains are hard-wired to revert back to our “mother tongue.” Savvy health care professionals are quick to recognize this fact and respond by arranging culturally appropriate care for their patients, especially those who are not fluent in English.
Health workers no longer need to turn away individual seeking help or instruct patients to arrange their own language support. And no longer does a patient have to compromise his/her dignity or privacy by relying on a child or neighbor who has no training for such an important task.
NMHSI is proud to offer medical interpretation services and training opportunities throughout the region. Our expert team helps providers to prevent poor health outcomes caused by communication failures and delivers the best quality health care possible.
