Earth Day is April 22, but you can celebrate it early in downtown Ludington. Join in a Seed Ball Bee to promote the benefits of native plants. Never heard of a seed ball? That's okay. Here's the scoop: seed balls are tiny models of the living world made of clay, soil, seed and water, and contain all the seeds needed for a complete habitat. It is an ancient technique—no tilling, no chemicals, no sweat farming needed. Seed balls have been used globally to combat desertification, poverty and hunger, as well as to inhibit the spread of non-native plants species.

The Lowdown

Where: The United Methodist Church, 107 S. Harrison.

When: April 12, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Hint: Wear clothes you can get dirty and bring a pizza box or egg carton for transporting your seed balls home.
