Northern Michigan Weddings: Matt and Adrienne had only two wishes for their wedding: family and simplicity. “The most important thing was family. The more involved the family, the better. We also wanted everything to look easy, to achieve romance through the natural and simple,” says Adrienne.
The couple, who met at the University of Michigan, live in Colorado, where Matt plays for the National Hockey League’s Colorado Avalanche, but they wanted to be married in their home state of Michigan, where they summer during Matt’s off-season. Adrienne’s mom suggested her favorite yearly vacation spot, The Homestead, a beautiful Northern Michigan resort nestled on Lake Michigan’s shoreline in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The young couple happily agreed.
Though the early June date could have easily spelled wet, cold weather in Northern Michigan, the couple’s relaxed attitude of “if it rains, it rains” was rewarded with a perfect, warm sunny day. “The Hunwick wedding was so much fun,” said Emily Anderson, a wedding sales associate at The Homestead, “I’ve never met a more relaxed bride.”
Chairlifts whisked family and close friends to the top of the mountain, where Adrienne and Matt said “I do” in front of sweeping Lake Michigan views blazoned bright blue from the sun. A judge who is a close friend of the bride’s family eloquently performed the marriage, and Adrienne’s mother and Matt’s godfather added short readings. By the end of the couple’s sweet and simple vows, everyone was crying except Adrienne, who couldn’t stop smiling.
After the ceremony, guests took chairlifts down to The Homestead’s Mountain Flowers Lodge for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, while photographer Kelly Sweet took the first pictures of Matt and Adrienne as husband and wife on The Homestead’s lush, waterside grounds.
Understated centerpieces kept Mountain Flowers Lodge open and bright during the reception, as guests dined on a Michigan-inspired menu catered by The Homestead featuring mushroom risotto, whitefish and cherry-glazed chicken. Dessert was an all-Michigan lineup of cherry and apple pie from Grand Traverse Pie Company with Moomers Homemade Ice Cream for dessert.
The fun didn’t stop after the Friday wedding. Matt and Adrienne planned a weekend of activities for their guests at The Homestead, including a golf outing for the guys, beach time for the girls on Saturday, and a Lake Michigan bonfire on Saturday night. By the end of the weekend, everyone involved in the wedding had become friends and was making plans to stay in touch—including Adrienne’s mother and The Homestead’s Emily Anderson.
As for the couple? They’re now expecting their first child.
