Love Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore? Come on, what's not to love? Cliffs of limestone soaring over Lake Superior's shores, miles of quiet beaches, waterfalls inside forests, a near-deserted island, giant dunes, plus sublime camping, kayaking, hiking and bird-watching ...
Add to that list another beaut: the Do Your Part! For Climate Friendly Parks campaign. Pictured Rocks is one of 15 national parks in the country to join the campaign. It's membership means the park is a part of an online, interactive program that allows you--park visitors and park lovers--to estimate and reduce your carbon footprint in the name of your favorite park.
Go to DoYourPartParks.org. Sign in. Fill in some blanks to estimate your current carbon footprint. The site will give you dozens of easy ways you can reduce your current footprint--say, turning down your thermostat 10 degrees, cutting 50 miles of weekly driving and switching three incandescent light bulbs to fluorescents. You pick the efforts you're willing to make, set the number--in this case, of degrees, miles or light bulbs--and make a pledge to do so in the name of your park. You can go online to see how many others have joined your park's campaign, as well as its progress and that of other participating parks across the nation.
Of course, the best way to chart your park's progress is to pay a visit and see for yourself. A little incentive? Check out these stories about the sweetest spots in Pictured Rocks:
