Laid-off autoworkers and their families can still enjoy a summer vacation Up North—for free.

Joe Breidenstein, who owns several vacation home rentals at Springbrook Hills near Walloon Lake, has teamed up with the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce to offer free mid-week Vacations to out-of-work auto workers. The Jordan Inn, a Bed & Breakfast in nearby East Jordan has joined the intitiative.

Couples or families can head to Boyne Country for up to three mid-week days of fun, relaxation and discovery in a vacation home.  Breidenstein stated, “It's tough enough on the kids without looking forward to a vacationless summer. The travel and tourism industry owes our middle class auto related workers much for our past growth and success.”

He adds, “This gesture is a thank you and an opportunity to get recharged as they begin retraining or starting a new career.”

According to Jim Baumann, Chamber Director, “I expect other Boyne Area Chamber members to offer their properties when vacant for a short vacation. It's a productive use of a property that might be empty during our prime vacation season.” The 3-day vacation can run Monday through Thursday, subject to availability. The only cost is a nominal $50 for cleaning service touch-up.

What a wonderful idea to provide vacations for out of work autoworkers. My nephew was laid off for a few months called back, luckily; but I forwarded the info to him to pass on to those who were not so fortunate. Thank you for giving them a bright spot to look forward to in a dim future.....at least for the moment....your generosity could make a HUGE difference to someone who feels hopeless.
