Northern Michigan Events: Everything is better in Northern Michigan, including the Fourth of July. To make your holiday planning a little more summery, stress free and relaxed, we've pulled together a quick list of Fourth of July events going on throughout Northern Michigan. Though they may be held in different towns, all of these activities have one thing in common--their low key, fresh, fun, Northern Michigan spirit!
This Fourth of July head out to the small Northern Michigan town of Leland, just a short drive from Traverse City to celebrate America's birthday. Bring the kids with you to enjoy a lovely summer day! To get the most out of your day off, get there early in the day and grab a sandwich at the Village Cheese Shanty in Fishtown. Then head down to the beach and play! If you need a break from the water and sand, meander up to Main Street for the parade at 3pm. This display of red, white and blue is overflowing with Americana and is the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day! Plan ahead if you want to see the fireworks show though, the Leland fireworks are the night before.
From July 2-7 2012, Fief Lake is pulling out all of the patriotic stops. Events include a canoe race on the third, daily music in the park, fireworks and a parade on the fourth, and a special "Kid's Day" on the fifth. Interested in learning more? Keep your celebrations vintage this year in Glen Arbor, near the Sleeping Bear Dunes! Attend an old-fashioned flag-raising at Old Settlers' Picnic Ground, enjoy performances by local musicians, and that good old summer stand-by, fresh squeezed lemonade.
July 4, 2012 from 1pm to 11pm
Downtown Beaver Island
A parade, cannon fire, Island Airways Flyover, and obxiously fire works--Fourth of July on beautiful Beaver Island is a non-stop day of patriotic to-dos!
Lake City claims the title with their big celebration that includes a carnival, arts & crafts show, beach volleyball, 2K, 5K, 10K and fun run, parade, fireworks, children’s parade, venetian parade, car raffle, battle of the bands, karaoke contest and nightly entertainment. The theme this year is "Let Freedom Ring."
Join this small-town 4th of July celebration! Family entertainment includes a parade, kids game, fire department open house, movies by the bay at American Legion Park and of course, fireworks!
Experience a traditional celebration of America's Independence in "small town" Central Lake. Feast at the pancake breakfast, outdoor market and strawberry social before the noon parade, watch or participate in the 4th Annual Ryan Shay Midsummer Night Run, then watch Sarah Schieber in concert before the firework show at Herrick Field.
Head to City Park on the AuSable River in Grayling to free kids fishing, Fourth of July concessions including free watermelon, a karaoke contest, kids games and attractions and fireworks.
The theme this year celebrates the building of the breakwall: "The Dream is Solid as a Rock!" Celebration includes a pie sale, parade, games, food, music and a great fireworks display at sunset. The parade starts at 1pm, with games to follow, a street dance at 7pm and fireworks at dusk.
If you're looking for a new way to celebrate the Fourth of July, head up to the Bay View Music Festival in Bay View, MI. This patriotic extravaganza features classic patriotic songs (think favorites like Our Country Tis of Thee), works by American composers and a military services medley preformed by the Bay View faculty artists and the newest resident ensemble, Spectrum Bass. And the best part of this musical celebration? It will end just in time for everyone to make to the beach-side fireworks display! For more information, check out: bayviewfestival.org.
