Northern Michigan: Watershed Center Raises Senate Bill 1052 Awareness
Northern Michigan: Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay bolsters efforts against Senate Bill 1052, in order to protect local shorelines and natural habitats.
Northern Michigan: A new bill passed by Senate may negatively impact natural habitats along Northern Michigan shorelines, and Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay aims to stop it. They are encouraging Northern Michigan residents to tell local legislators to vote "No" on Senate Bill 1052 before it passes the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism this Tuesday, June 5th.
The Watershed Center warns that the proposed Senate Bill 1052 will allow the destruction of coastal wetlands along Great Lakes shorelines, including the removal of plants down to the water's edge without any formal state review. The Watershed Center argues that this is dangerous because these plants:
- Provide habitat for 90 percent of Great Lakes fish when they're young, which ensures good fishing for generations to come
- Provide habitat for waterfowl to breed and raise their young
- Are the last chance to filter polluted runoff before it washes into the Great Lakes
