In addition to one-day Independence day events, like a morning flag raising, 10am Independence Day Parade, Run for the Fund Motorcycle Ride, and, of course, fireworks, the Manistee Forest Festival’s exciting weeklong events continue on the holiday. From The Little Smilin’ Choo Choo, a favorite for kids, to the Manistee Art Institute Juried Art Show, there are classic summertime events for visitors of all ages.
Although the Bayview Music Festival’s concert series offers live outdoor music twice a week throughout the summer, Fourthfest, their Independence Day celebration is especially memorable. Stay for the sunset and then watch the annual fireworks competition between Harbor Springs and Petoskey over the water.
Claiming to be the “Best 4th in the North”, Fife Lake’s weeklong celebration kicks off on July 3rd. The usual crowd pleasers are brought out on the Fourth, like a patriotic parade, lakeside fireworks, and live music, but Independence Day runs, pie eating contests, a car show, flea market, and canoe races also round out the week's schedule.
Celebrate the Fourth of July holiday weekend out on Beaver Island, where live music, a kid’s carnival, and downtown parade fill the day before fireworks shine over the harbor.
The lakeside town of Leland hosts its annual firework show at Hancock Park on the eve of Fourth of July, but continues the festivities right into the next afternoon. Attend the Fourth of July Parade (at 3pm), where antique cars, flying candy, and waving American flags are trademark. Have kids? Head over to the Old Art Building from 1-4pm for Kid’s Bike Decorating where they can embellish their own ride and be part of the parade action.
