Step inside Gallery 150, the place on Pentwater's Hancock Street with the offset plate-glass door and hip metal numerals, and soak up the cool contemporary scene: colorful, bold modern art filling the expansive white walls.
"People are blown away - they think they're in SoHo or Chicago," says gallery manager Diana Foster. Actually, the building is a former funeral home, which Foster's brother, Pentwater architect Norm Dodds, gutted and resurrected as a space where cutting-edge artists with ties to the Muskegon Museum of Art could show their works. He ripped out walls and flooring, put in huge front windows, museum-quality lighting and an outdoor courtyard, and when the gallery opened in this tiny village in 2006, the response was overwhelmingly positive, Foster says.
Big city-style receptions and wine tastings are among the events at this year-round space. Open regularly throughout the summer (starting after Memorial Day); open in the off-season by appointment.
