28 hours of skin contact from a batch of perfectly ripe Leelanau County cabernet franc resulted in a not-so-pink wine with plenty of peppercorn and dark fruit audacity. The wine is very dry with only 0.5 percent residual sugar but sports a soft lingering mouthfeel and demands a second bottle.
The inaugural pinot blanc from Hawthorne’s three-acre Old Mission vineyard offers juicy orchard fruit aromas and carnationlike floral underpinnings. To retain the fresh angularity favored by the grape the wines were picked based on acid levels and vinified in stainless steel.
