O'Keefe's & The Applegate Collection
Todd Zawistowski
Baby, it's cold outside. Warm up the morning with a steaming mug of tea at The Silvertree Deli and Gourmet Market (119 N. St. Joseph, 231-271-2271). There, among the wines, foods and coffees, you'll find jars of organic teas homegrown in the summer garden of Leelanau County local Angela Macke. Her vanilla-lovely Creamy Earl Grey and peppermint hints of Leelanau Licorice are local favorites. (Hint: 25-cent sticks of raspberry- and lemon-infused honey sit next to the register - they'll take your tea over the top.)
Next stop: Shop till you drop. You'll find holiday gifts for everyone on your list at local art hotspots like The Painted Bird (216 N. St. Joseph, 231-271-3050), Michigan Artists (309 N. St. Joseph, 231-271-4922) and Treeline Galleries (103 Jefferson, 231-271-5363). Covet vintage? The Red Ladder Consignment Shop (326 N. St. Joseph, 231-271-3231) has the stuff of which cottage and farmhouse dreams are made. Feeling saucy? Hit the Happy Woman (309 St. Joseph, 231-271-0094) and find grin-worthy goodies for chicks of all ages. Finally, poke around Bahle's Department Store (210 St Joseph, 231-271-3841), a local landmark that's been outfitting locals since 1876.
When you're whooped, stroll down to Marina Park, the best spot to watch clouds roll and roil over the bay. Enerdyne (223 St Joseph, 231-271-6033) will outfit you with an all-weather notebook to sketch the scene.
At day's end, warm up with a beer and burger at Boone's Prime Time Pub (102 N. St. Joseph, 231-271-6688). Your fingers should have warmed by now, but if they haven't, stick them in a classic red-and-white-striped box of hot, fresh-popped popcorn at The Bay Theatre (241 St. Joseph, 231-271-3772), a single-screen, Victorian-style movie house that - even with its up to-the-minute movies and documentaries - raises the curtains on a classic theater experience.
