In retrospect it was only a matter of time before artist and crafter Sarah Bearup-Neal found quilting. When she did, she took to it in a bold, individual manner and with a genuine belief in the quilt as art. That was 2003, and since then Bearup-Neal has been incorporating artmaking principles such as color relations and nonrepresentational lines and stripes into her striking pieces. She uses recycled materials (men’s striped dress shirts are her favorite), giving the fabrics in her quilts a valuable second life. Her pieces, all originals, may be purchased directly from her studio.
This colorful wall hanging, Figure/Ground #23: Crosses, is available for $1,800. Contact Sarah Bearup-Neal, Unexpected Fiberwork, 231-228-6042.
