Northern Michigan Events: Grow Benzie and National Resources Conservation Services invite garden lovers of all levels to a seminar at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 4. The evening will be hosted at Grow Benzie, located at 5885 M115, Benzonia, MI. Northern Michigan is proud to present Craig Schaaf, a highly regarded agricultural specialist to discuss the third in a series of classes this fall. For anyone who loves to garden, beginner or experienced, Craig's classes will increase your knowledge about gardening, food preservation, and other alternatives you may not have considered.
This seminar will focus on the necessity of building a living, mineralized soil, using compost and minerals to nurture the soil which in turn nurtures the plants. Techniques for making compost will be discussed as well as the benefits of adding various amendments to your soil to add a full spectrum of minerals to your produce. Craig will also explain the role of different living organisms and how they work symbiotically to benefit the plants in your garden. Through this discussion you will learn how a healthy soil will cut your pests and disease to a minimum and allow you to enjoy your time in the garden more.
All classes in this fall series are scheduled at 7 p.m. with a potluck beginning at 6 p.m. This format has been popular to allow people a chance to have dinner with Craig and be ready for the evening class. Please bring a dish to pass, drink and table service. Donations are requested of $7.00 per single or $10.00 per family.
