Grand Traverse Bay Y.M.C.A

Brief History

The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA has been serving the kids and families of the region since 1964 with 65 different programs that teach YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Through our "No One Denied" financial assistance program, no one has ever been turned away from YMCA programs or membership for inability to pay. At the YMCA, "Everybody Plays/Everybody Wins." The current capital campaign for The New Y will double usage to 30,000 facility and program members within the five county service area.

Goals

The goal statement of the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA is "strong kids, strong families, strong communities." The YMCA is a membership driven organization, but works toward this goal with programs for members and non-members alike. Each program is nationally sanctioned by the YMCA of the USA, and is focused on character development and individual growth in spirit, mind, and body. Special focus is given to youth, family, teens, and senior programs. The mission of the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, and programs are offered for all age groups from infant to senior citizen.

Volunteer Opportunities

In 2007, over 500 volunteers gave 35,000 hours of their time to YMCA programs. Many of those hours were dedicated to youth sports programs, but teen dances, child care, special events, office and maintenance work, and fitness programs also offered volunteer opportunities. To volunteer at the YMCA, contact Corie Layton at 231-933-9622.

Giving Opportunities

The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA accepts gifts in many forms including cash, in-kind gifts, planned gifts, etc. Gifts are usually designated for financial assistance or general operations ("Invest in Youth"), capital campaign ("The New Y"), or specific programs (Y Gymnastics, Y Tennis, Y Day Care, etc.). For a comprehensive Gift Acceptance and Recognition Policy, please contact CEO Tom Van Deinse at 231-933-9622.

Biggest Need in 2009

Construction on "The New Y" will begin when $11.2 million has been pledged to this historic project. With continued generous support from individuals, corporations, and foundations, the plan is to attain this goal in 2009 so that The New Y may be opened in 2010.
