Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan

Mission Statement

The mission of Child and Family Services is to strengthen and nurture children and families by ensuring their safety and well being while promoting healing and growth through education, support, and advocacy. We accomplish this mission in two offices, in Traverse City and Harbor Springs, through the extraordinary efforts of 60+ employees and a host of volunteers.

Brief History

Child and Family Services has provided foster care and adoption services to northwestern Michigan since 1937. Over the years we have added a whole roster of programs to help people in need, including:

  • Behavioral Health Services
  • Pregnancy Counseling
  • Treatment for Child Survivors of Sexual Abuse (VOCA)
  • Family Group Decision Making
  • Safe Haven Supervised Visitation and Exchange Play Therapy

Goals

The goals of Child and Family Services may be summarized by our Vision in Action: Respect: We will treat clients, volunteers, staff, referral sources, and the members of our community with compassion and dignity. Innovation: We will create an inventive and exciting environment, through proactive leadership, that guides and sets industry standards for service delivery and advocacy. Service: We will serve by providing high quality, efficient, and versatile programs for the greatest benefit of all. Excellence: We will conduct ourselves with the highest standards of integrity, ethics and fiscal responsibility.

Volunteer Opportunities

Many! Child and Family Services offers a variety of meaningful volunteer experiences to those interested in making a difference in a child's life and their own. These include joining our board of directors, mentoring, scrap booking, job shadowing, child care, teaching a skill, collecting material donations, and assisting with our fundraising events or in our administrative office.

Giving Opportunities

Many! In addition to giving of your time and talents as a volunteer, you may wish to provide financial support for a favorite program or effort. Child and Family Services gratefully accepts community support to assure that all those who need our services can access them, regardless of their ability to pay. Biggest Need in 2009

Given the difficult economic times for so many of our friends and neighbors, family counseling and outreach is a huge need. Two of our programs that provide services to children, Safe Haven, for families affected by domestic violence, and VOCA, for children who have been sexually abused, are partially funded with government grants but are also in need of community support. Your help is so important! Thank you!
