HomeStretch Nonprofit Housing Corporation

Mission Statement

Build affordable housing.

Brief History

In the early 90's, the Traverse Bay Area Human Services Coordinating Council identified the shortage of affordable housing as a growing regional problem. The Council's Affordable Housing Task Force obtained a grant from Rotary Charities of Traverse City to complete a comprehensive housing needs assessment for the Traverse City Area including the counties of Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau. The Housing Needs Study-Traverse City Area revealed a severe lack of affordable housing and characterized the situation as an "affordable housing crisis." The study recommended that a community-based regional housing development organization be formed to identify and acquire the technical and financial resources needed to build affordable housing. The task force incorporated HomeStretch in 1996. Homestretch became a Community Land Trust in 2004. This unique form of homeownership preserves the public investment in affordable housing and provides low-income homebuyers the opportunity to purchase homes at prices well below market rate. To date, HomeStretch has developed and acquired a total of seventy-two housing units, which represents an investment of over $9.1 million.

Goals

HomeStretch is committed to providing quality-built housing affordable to low-income working families and special needs housing for the homeless and persons requiring supportive services.

Giving Opportunities

There is a growing and urgent need for affordable housing in the Traverse City area. Your donation will help strengthen communities one family at a time. All gifts are tax deductible. HomeStretch is a 501(c)(3) Community Housing Development Organization.

  • Cash Contributions: Contributions can be made by check payable to HomeStretch. Donations greater than $25 automatically provides Community Land Trust membership. See our website, www.homestretchhousing.org, for various levels of membership.
  • Gifts of Stock: Making a stock gift to HomeStretch can provide valuable tax benefits for you while helping working families and communities throughout the Grand Traverse region.
  • Real Estate: One of the biggest barriers HomeStretch continually faces is the purchasing of affordable vacant land. Through a real estate appraisal, a fair market rate value is determined and used as your charitable contribution to our organization.
  • Planned Giving: Making a commitment to HomeStretch in your will or other estate plan is an effective way to ensure that critical services are provided in your name to low-income families for generations to come. A Planned Gift allows you to keep your assets during your lifetime while taking comfort in the fact that you have made a commitment to help low-income children and families.
