Mission Statement

Helping people by linking services, resources, and opportunities.

Brief History

Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA) was founded in 1974 to create effective programming to help people in poverty. NMCAA combines federal, state, and local resources to strengthen communities by helping residents achieve greater self-sufficiency. Our skill-building programs include Head Start and Child & Family Development Programs, Personal Financial Management and Education, Tax Preparation, Weatherization, Homeownership Education and Opportunities, Home Repair, Meals on Wheels and Senior Dining, Food Distribution, Homelessness and Foreclosure Prevention, Heating Assistance.

Volunteer Opportunities

Generous neighbors deliver Meals on Wheels, read stories to pre-school children, teach budgeting to families in crisis, ride the bus with kids, complete tax returns, distribute food, help with fundraising projects, and work tirelessly side by side with our wonderful staff. For volunteer opportunities check out www.nmcaa.net

Giving Opportunities

With rising costs and job-loss, more families are turning to NMCAA for help. Since public funding has been reduced, NMCAA is turning to the community to help meet that demand. You can direct your donation to the NMCAA Endowment or any of these programs: NMCAA's Meals on Wheels Program--serving Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, and Wexford Counties--delivers nutritious prepared meals to fragile homebound seniors who are unable to prepare their own, helping them remain independent. The Walk for Warmth raises funds to help families facing cold winters with no money to heat their homes. The Homelessness Prevention Program helps the homeless and those at risk find and secure affordable housing or prevent eviction or foreclosure. Individual Development Accounts match participants' individual savings over time as they participate in educational programming for homeownership, education or entrepreneurship. Emergency Food Programs help our hungry neighbors with monthly distributions of nutritionally balanced food packages. Your generous contribution to any of these programs can be made in a number of ways:

  • Individual donations can be mailed directly to NMCAA or offered through www.nmcaa.net online contributions.
  • Corporate or Group Sponsorship: Your organization can help with one of our special events or designate the proceeds from one of your special events.
  • Planned Giving: Bequests provide "the gift that keeps on giving", helping ensure services will be there for future generations.
  • Tributes or Memorials: Honor your loved one by making a contribution in his or her name.

Fundraising Events

Gift of Warmth Gala: Join us January 24, 2009 at the Park Place Dome in Traverse City for an evening of fine food, regional wines, exquisite chocolates and live entertainment. Keep the Wheels Rolling: A community wide campaign to benefit the Meals on Wheels Program that "rolls" the entire month of January. *Formerly known as Northwest Michigan Human Services Agency.
