Kitchen designer Brooke Anderson worked with homeowner Mimi Boon to imbue the kitchen of her new condominium on Crooked Lake with a sense of elegant tradition. Glazed-white, pillowed (meaning the rails are raised and rounded) cabinets add understated luxury. Two tiers of wall cabinets lend coziness to the cathedral ceiling that rises 10 feet at its peak. The custom-fabricated range hood is camouflaged inside the cabinetry, a touch that helps minimize modern sensibilities and highlights an Old World feel.
Antarctica granite has the rich luster of marble, while hand-molded subway tiles feel as though they could be antiquities. The Old World look continues down to the hand-scraped, wide-plank cherry floors that are stained a dark mahogany. The gorgeous island countertop is maple, stained to match the floor, and made by Northern Michigan’s own Michigan Maple Block company.
