As if the U.P.’s snow belt doesn’t guarantee enough fresh powder, Big Powderhorn welcomes even more new snow guns this year. The mountain is in a hurry to welcome back weekly downhill races each Sunday. Tricksters will flip when they see the two newly designed terrain parks: Oxbow and Powderkeg. Oxbow, though designed to be a bit less challenging than Powderkeg, is outfitted with a 115-foot-long straight rail and a 65-foot rainbow rail that rises 7 feet above the hill. Take advantage of the discounted 1–4 day “Hill Hopper” passes that allow access to Big Powderhorn and nearby Indianhead Mountain and don’t forget that children 9 and under ski free with the purchase of an adult ticket. The offerings don’t stop with slope sports. Grab the family for a winter picnic—three mountainside huts are available for group gatherings and come fully equipped with fireplaces, grills, charcoal and everything you need for the perfect winter banquet. Your food and supplies can even be delivered for a small convenience charge. At day’s end, families can glide around the lit outdoor ice rink, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride or soak up live tunes at the Snowflake Lounge.
New Year’s Eve means fireworks over the mountain and a torchlight parade. Saddle up for western-style fun at the Country Kicker, featuring barrel racing on skis, a bandana toss and an obstacle course with country music, dance and food.
