Tiny Leland is one of the Midwest’s top Lake Michigan vacation destinations, thanks in part to its legendary Fishtown—a set of preserved historic fishing shanties that are now home to boutiques and food emporiums. The Leland port, about a half-hour’s drive from Traverse City, draws Great Lakes sailors and powerboaters by the thousands all summer long, and catching the crowded harbor on a warm summer evening is an unforgettable memory and adds to the romance of the lakeside burg. Leland is also home port to the ferries that take visitors to South Manitou and North Manitou Islands, both part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which was voted Most Beautiful Place in America by the viewers of Good Morning America. Leland is on the lovely Leelanau Peninsula, which is one of America’s premier fruit growing regions, most noted for cherries, apples and vineyards that supply the region’s renowned and rapidly growing wine country.
