Mackinac Island

Set in Lake Huron in the Straits of Mackinac and in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge, Mackinac Island is one of the most popular Northern Michigan travel destinations, and is one of the most popular travel destinations in all of the Great Lakes. This Northern Michigan island is filled with hotels—including the famous Grand Hotel, with its longest porch in the world—restaurants and attractions including the 18th-century Fort Mackinac. Because cars are prohibited on Mackinac Island, modes of transportation include horse-drawn carriages and biking. Beautiful views of the Great Lakes and of the island's historic Victorian cottages abound on this island that is 8 miles in circumference. The island's two biggest events are the Lilac Festival in June and the finish party for the Chicago Yacht Club "Race to Mackinac," the storied Chicago to Mackinac Island yacht race that follows the Lake Michigan shoreline to the island. Three ferry lines service the island from Mackinaw City in Michigan's Lower Peninsula and St. Ignace on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
