At 31,700 miles, Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, and the third largest by volume, engaging beachcombers, thrilling fishermen and challenging mariners.
The lake contains three quadrillion (3,000,000,000,000,000) gallons of water, ten percent of the world's fresh surface water and over half of the water in the Great Lakes. Although the water is cold, it is also clear, attracting SCUBA divers from all over the world to dive shipwrecks, five of which are favorite dive sites.
Any time of year, the Lake Superior basin is a spectacular place to visit. Summer on this big lake offers a respite from hotter climates since a cool breeze almost always seems to come off the water. Sometimes foggy and damp in the fall and downright windy in November gales, the lake and the environment around it are ever-changing.
Lake Superior is still almost synonymous with "wild," since there is so much undeveloped waterfront, so many acres of undisturbed forest and still, a plethora of wildlife species that thrive in a landscape that somehow still feels undiscovered.
