Three Weeks until Traverse City's North American VASA

Everything is on schedule for a great Traverse City’s VASA weekend coming in three weeks, a premiere Michigan ski event.  Snow conditions at Timber Ridge and on the VASA pathway are excellent and the TART grooming crew is fine-tuning the trail on a daily basis. All of the many amenities of our host, Timber Ridge, are ready for an onslaught of skiers after hosting 415 snowshoe racers this weekend in a national qualifying race.

*All 12, 27 and 50km races will have multiple waves based on the skier’s average time/km skied.

Vasa Pasta Dinner:The VASA pasta dinner will be served at Timber Ridge from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday as a benefit for local youth ski programs. Fresh pasta, a choice of sauces, bread, salad and beverages will be included for a reasonable "all-you-can-eat-carbo-load" price. Meal prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children. It will easily be the best deal in town!

Packet Pick-Up:Packet Pick-Up will begin at noon on Friday, February 11th and run until 9:00 pm at the Timber Ridge Resort. Click here for a map to Timber Ridge.

Hagerty Insurance Gran Travers Cross Country ClassicSunday, February 13th, 2011

Hagerty Insurance Gran Travers Start Times:
6k Classic – 9:15 a.m.16k Classic – 9:00 a.m.

As part of the Vasa weekend festival of Races, there will be two special classic skiing races that will be part of the Michigan Cup series. The Sunday events will be offered by Hagerty Insurance. The Gran Travers will feature both 6k and 16k challenging loop courses that will capture the rich heritage of traditional cross-country skiing at it’s finest.The 16k race will start at 9:00 a.m. at Timber Ridge Resort. The 6k race will start at 9:15 a.m.

The trail will be carefully groomed and double-tracked to provide kick-and-gliders the opportunity to test their skills while enjoying the breath-taking beauty of the Vasa Pathway.

The Hagerty Insurance Gran Travers will be held on the same course as the North American Vasa. Men and women who ski the race can qualify for Michigan Cup points. It will be a great way to enjoy winter skiing and test your classical skills.

Junior VASA RacesSaturday, February 12th, 2011

This year the Jr. VASA races will again be sponsored by American Waste. The races are for kids from 4-15 who are not part of high school ski programs. We consider this group as future VASA skiers and the Vasa Board supports youth nordic ski programs in the Grand Traverse Region. These high-energy events will start at 12:30 pm on Saturday, February 13th as follows::

12:30 pm, 1km Classic, Ages 5-under and 6-712:40 pm, 3km Classic, Ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-1512:45 pm, 3km Freestyle, Ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-15

Jr. VASA Race Fee – $5 per person

Valentine’s Day TourSunday, February 13th, 2011

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we have added a tour starting at 1PM on Sunday, February 13th. You can ski with your special someone or with friends at your own casual pace. Distances up to 16km will be available on our immaculately groomed trails. In addition, some special music will be played at the start/finish area and at our food stops. Proceeds will benefit the Munson Women’s Heart Health Fund.

Grand Champion Awards

Once again,we will offer two-day stage racing. In addition to the usual medals for Saturday’s VASA and Sunday’s Gran Travers, we have something new for 2011. The racer with the best both-days combined time for these selected races goes home with a new pair of racing skis from these award sponsors, along with a trophy:

    * GRAND CHAMPION – best combined time for 50km Freestyle & 16km Classic races (sponsored by Grayling’s Cross Country Ski Shop)    * RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION – best combined time for 27km Freestyle & 16km Classic races (sponsored by Cross Country Ski HQ of Higgins Lake – Roscommon)

All skiers registering for the above described qualifying races are automatically entered for GC and Reserve GC at no extra charge. Separate male and female categories, no separate age divisions.

Awards Party

The Awards Party will start at 5:30 pm on Saturday at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. The address is 100 Grand Traverse Village Blvd., Acme, Michigan. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
