On Monday, March 17th, Traverse City’s National Writers Series welcomes George Packer to the City Opera House for a symposium focusing on Packer’s coverage of the Irag War and his most recent publication, The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America.  The Unwinding won the 2013 National Book Award for non-fiction, and discusses the slow unraveling of the cultural fabric that has historically bound the United States.

Since 2003, Packer has written for The New Yorker, where his work has focused on international affairs of the early 21st century.  His seminal work on the Iraq War, The Assassins’ Gate: America in Iraq, was named one of the ten best books of 2005 by the New York Times and won the New York Public Library’s Helen Bernstein Book Award. Articles by Packer have also been published in The New York Times Magazine, Dissent, Mother Jones, Harper’s, and numerous other publications.

Joining Packer on stage at the City Opera House will be guest host Benjamin Busch, a former Marine whose accomplishments range from appearing in HBO’s Generation Kill to publishing his acclaimed memoir, Dust to Dust.  Busch is a resident of Reed City.
