This March, drop the kids off at the chairlift and enjoy a fine, Northern Michigan-made craft brew at a weekend event at Shanty Creek or Boyne Highlands.

More than 220 brews from around the country, sizzling burgers, and brats on the grill and more is all on tap for Boyne Highlands’ fifth annual Brew-Ski festival March 8. Follow up the next weekend at Shanty Creek Resorts’ Beer and Boards Brewfest March 15 at the resort’s Schuss Mountain. The après-ski event (3–6 p.m.) features some of the state’s best-known craft brewers, including Shanty’s Bellaire neighbor Short’s Brewing Company (shantycreek.com).

Or go to Boyne or Shanty any day and try the custom-made microbrews on tap. Petoskey Brewing Company developed Boyne’s Everett’s IPA, named in honor of Boyne founder Everett Kircher; Short’s Brewing Co.’s Black Diamond American Dark Lager, created for Shanty Creek, proved so popular that the resort created a ski package around it. The two-night Black Diamond package ($309/person) includes two-nights lodging, lift tickets for two days and an evening, dinner, two Black Diamond drafts and round-trip shuttle to Short’s brew pub in Bellaire.
