Crooked Tree Arts Center, in conjunction with the Petoskey News-Review, the Bob Schulze Fund for Creative Writing at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, McLean and Eakin Booksellers and Walloon Writers Review, is hosting the 15th Annual Young Writers Juried Exposition. Elementary, middle and high school writers who attend schools served by the Char-Em ISD (or home school students in Charlevoix or Emmet counties) are invited to submit one work of poetry, prose or one of each to the exposition.

Winning poetry and prose pieces for each level—elementary, middle and high school—will be published in the Petoskey News-Review on Friday, May 5. On Saturday, May 6, the Young Writers Juried Exposition Awards Reception will take place at Crooked Tree Arts Center from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. All winners receive a medal, journal and McLean and Eakin Booksellers gift card. Middle and high school winners in both poetry and prose receive monetary prizes as well: 1st place $100, 2nd place $75 and 3rd place $50.

New for 2017, all first-place winning pieces will be printed in the third edition of the Walloon Writers Review, which will be printed in Fall 2017. All winning authors will have an opportunity to read their work publicly at the awards reception. As an added treat, guests can enjoy the Youth Arts Festival’s Culinary Arts Showcase from Noon–2 p.m., where students from the Petoskey Culinary Arts program will create and serve refreshments.

“I love seeing this annual event continue to grow with each passing year,” says Alex Dailey, CTAC Public Relations and Young Writers Juried Exposition Coordinator. “It’s great collaborating with so many individuals who appreciate and want to promote our community’s young writers. I’m thrilled to have the Walloon Writers Review joining our team this year!”

All Char-Em ISD area teachers are invited to submit their students’ work to the competition. All work must be submitted by a parent or teacher online through Crooked Tree’s website, www.crookedtree.org, beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4 through 5 p.m. on Friday, April 14.

The Youth Arts Festival, including the Young Writers Juried Exposition, is generously supported by the Kroeger-Mainland Family Fund of Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. The Culinary Arts Showcase is supported in part by Lynn Dinning and Good Hart Glass Works.
