Steve Arens founded Leelanau Coffee Roasting in January 1993 and rented a space on Lake Street in Glen Arbor. Steve’s brother, John, quickly partnered in the business in 1994, and as Cherry Republic and Leelanau Coffee grew, they moved over one block to Western Avenue, opening the new shop in 1998. Leelanau Coffee Roasting offers coffee drinks and beans in the retail cafe; coffee beans and merchandise via mail order; and wholesales coffee to a wonderful collection of cafes, gift stores, basket companies, and specialty and grocery stores including Meijer. Jody Arens is married to John and wears many hats in the company, so her unofficial title is “Coffee Girl.” She actually is out there in the field signing up new accounts and taking care of existing ones. We talk food, restaurants, music and coffee on Lick the Plate.
