At Michigamme Shores campground in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the quintessential American summer comes to life.

The atmosphere at this Upper Peninsula attraction is reminiscent of campground depictions from eras past. Families surround campfires. Children run wild tearing down roadways on bicycles, their training wheels scratching against the pavement. Parents and children play games of catch or tag. It’s a place where neighbor recognizes neighbor and many join other campsites to eat, joke, or strum a guitar … Michigamme Shores is a place of your childhood dreams.

At Michigamme, campers load up their RV’s and settle in for several weeks or months in the summer. The Northern Michigan campground is a destination for Yoopers looking to get away. The 80-site area is situated on Lake Michigamme, west of Marquette off of Highway 41. This best-kept Upper Peninsula secret welcomes animal lovers, and many families bring along their furry friend. Don’t be surprised if you see larger four-legged creatures, too, as moose are known to frequent the property.

If you’re young, or just young at heart, the campsite contains 1000 feet of sandy beachfront and an inflatable water obstacle course.

The floating playground comes complete with a water trampoline, climbing wall, and slide. Michigamme Shores also offers by-the-hour canoe, kayak, and paddleboard rentals starting at $10 an hour. If you want to pick up the pace, rent pontoons or motorboats by the hour or for the day. (Pontoon rates start at $125 for 2 hours; motorboat rates start at $65 for 2 hours.)

The wooded campground houses restrooms, showers, WiFi, and 24-hour laundry facilities for those not looking for a completely rustic experience. Making your stay even more convenient, at the entrance of the grounds, you can’t miss the red and white camp store providing any needed or forgotten sundries.

Michigamme Shores is open May 15 through October 15 and offers pull through, full hook-up and tent sites. Tent sites are $30 per night, while RV sites start at $150 for a minimum of two nights. If you prefer four walls and a floor, Michigamme Shores has rustic cabins on the property available to rent for $65 per night. Don’t forget pillows and blankets.

Celebrate the summer the way our frontier-loving ancestors intended, with loved ones and good conversation, surrounding an open fire. Michigamme Shores offers the best parts of an ideal American summer. Unplug. Relax. Enjoy the scenery of the U.P. and cool waters of Lake Michigamme.

If you’re musically inclined, grab your guitar and stroll or pedal to a neighboring campsite.

The campground offers convenient pull-through sites for RV’s.
