Lake Michigan is about to see a big change. After a long period of quiet weather, get ready for showers, storms, strong gusty winds and high waves.

Showers and storms roll in Tuesday morning as a storm system develops well south of Traverse City. As it builds, winds whip up and shift to the North/Northwest bringing wind gusts up to 30 mph at times. Waves will increase to 3–5’ during the day with 4-8’ toward evening. Some areas may even see 10’, with the worst of it remaining south of Manistee. Leland could see up to 8′ waves.

This is NOT normal for this time of year. Some of the waves will top piers, especially those on the North Side. Dangerous swimming conditions are expected. Tune in to 9 & 10 News—chief meteorologist Tom O’Hare will share more on current weather conditions.
