Someone’s been murdered at a Traverse City speakeasy … are you ready to solve the crime? Get ready for a wild night with plenty of plot twists.

This murder takes place in the dark underbelly of Prohibition-era Traverse City. A collection of bootleggers, gangsters, G-men, flappers and molls will compete to solve a murder before the night is through. Much of guests’ time will be spent mingling, interviewing suspects and taking pictures in the photo booth. Complimentary coat check will be available, so guests may come in full costume. The event at 123 Speakeasy is set for Monday, October 29 from 5–8 p.m.

Each guest will receive character notes with background information, temperament and suggested costume ideas to prepare ahead of the evening. Dinner, dessert, cocktails and bonus challenges are included in the program, with prizes awarded at the end of the evening.

To give guests more freedom to move around the speakeasy chasing leads, a combination of room-temp and hot hors d’oeuvres will be passed by service staff. 123 Speakeasy specializes in “New American” fusion cuisine, using locally sourced, foraged and seasonal ingredients. The hearty bites vary with the seasons, ranging from antipasto skewers and smoked salmon crostini, to mini chicken and waffles with chili-maple syrup and fried green tomatoes with sriracha aioli. Guests should save their appetites since service will include the equivalent of a three-course sit-down meal throughout the evening.

“We’re so excited to be finally offering this event,” says co-owner Christine Keefe. “People have been asking for us to put on a murder mystery party since we opened, but we wanted to take our time to do it like we do everything here—theatrical, and maybe a bit over the top.

“Our space already looks like it is straight out of the Clue movie, so between that and our innovative food/drink menu, this is going to be unlike any other murder mystery party offered in the state. It’s going to be an immersive experience. It’s such a great excuse to get all dolled up; we really wanted to offer a unique and entertaining night on the town. This event allows us to get fancy without being too serious.”

A $90 ticket includes character assignment, dinner, dessert, unlimited drinks, coat check, tax and gratuity. The “Suspect Package” for $110 allows you to be a prime suspect/main character—perfect if you want to “nudge” your group into participating fully in the evening, or if you want to surprise a friend or loved one.
