Benzie Sunrise Rotary is holding its 11th annual cycling event on June 1 at Crystal Mountain Resort to raise funds for a year’s worth of impactful student programs. The Rotary funds programs ranging from free books for preschoolers to supporting at-risk high school seniors. Crystal Mountain President Chris MacInnes says, “We are pleased to host the Bike Up North event that empowers our youth with opportunities like Career Day and even trips to MSU, CMU and GVSU to explore future educational options.”
The event is featuring the Iron Fish Team Time Trial 100K/62 mi. race for 4-man and 3-woman teams as well as tour distances for riders of all abilities and anticipates over 400 riders. The ride showcases the best of the region by following the M-22 Michigan Pure Byway and roads with views of Platte Lake Crystal Lake, and Lake Michigan. “Our courses are designed for maximum beauty and safety,” says Michelle Russell, course coordinator. Crystal Mountain is the starting and ending point for all 4 distances—30, 45, 62, 100 miles—and will host a finish line hot buffet luncheon/party that can’t be missed. New this year is an après’ bike event at Iron Fish Distillery with games and classic cocktails.
Cyclists rave about the hospitality, courses and food stations featuring Cherry Hut pies for carb-reloading. “We are grateful for our platinum sponsors like Sam’s Club, Meijer, Munson Healthcare and Baird that share our passion for supporting programs for our youth and for our local providers of great Up North food and beverages that allow us to spoil the riders with special treats, including Graceland Fruit snacks and Stormcloud beer. It’s a great value for families and teams,” says Event Director Bill Kennis.
The 30-mile course has scenic rolling hills, passes through Kaleva and is mostly flat and very fast. The 45-mile route shares the 30-mile route to Kaleva and then heads northwest, with a few challenging hills, to the pristine shores of Bear Lake. The Metric Century (62 miles) features some of the area’s best biking roads and views. Riders will enjoy rolling hills through orchards and memorable panoramic views along the entire south shore of Crystal Lake. This course serves as the Team Time Trial with staggered start times and scoring is determined by the 3rd male rider from each team; 2nd female rider. The 100-mile route will challenge riders ready for an early season long ride by combining the best of the 62-mile and 45-mile routes.
