SAG: STEAM Academy for Girls

Since 1993, Raven Hill has offered a science/mathematics career expo for middle school students in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. STEAM Academy for Girls (SAG) will enhance that career expo program, providing more in-depth explorations and connections between science, history and art in a variety of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Artistry Mathematics) careers for elementary and middle school girls. The program is sponsored by the Hestia Circle of Giving, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

SAG will be limited to twenty girls per session and Raven Hill will encourage different participants for each monthly session. Girls can be put on a waiting list, if there are open spaces. There will be five sessions from 10:30 am to noon on the second Saturdays of November, December, February, March and May of the 2018-19 school year. The goal is to reach 100 girls. The sessions coincide with Raven Hill’s FREE Second Saturday program, so families are invited to stay and enjoy the hands-on museum, animals and outdoor exhibits, when they come to pick up their girls at noon. FREE Second Saturday hours are from noon to 4pm.

On the second Saturday in June 2019, Raven Hill will present SAG Awards to presenters and participants. Families will be invited to join in the celebration, encouraging them to support their daughters in STEAM careers.

STEAM Academy for Girls (SAG) participants will work with engineers & other professionals to explore various STEM and STEAM careers in a hands-on, minds-on way that will promote engineering and related fields as career options for girls by encouraging them to practice critical thinking- and problem-solving skills and imparting a sense of confidence to study STEM and STEAM subjects in high school.
