As a member of the Administrative Team, the Director of Surgical Services provides leadership to ensure consistent, high quality care to meet the vision, mission, and goals of McLaren Northern Michigan. This person serves as the liaison to Physicians, medical groups, hospital colleagues, the community and vendors. The Director will be responsible for overseeing the highest quality of patient care in the inpatient/outpatient Perioperative Services Department. The primary role of this position is to work with the Medical and Hospital staff to coordinate the delivery of comprehensive, conveniently available, high quality, cost effective Perioperative Services.


  • Identifies with, shares in, and displays commitment to the mission, philosophy, and vision of MNM. Demonstrates knowledge of the mission, give consideration to the core values of the mission in daily encounters and business transactions, demonstrates caring, compassion and sensitivity to all.

  • Develops the system business plan for the Perioperative Services Department including: Service/Program elements; budgetary forecasting with team members; support the development of the system strategic plan.

  • Relates the MNM Strategic Plan to business plans across system components to ensure effective and efficient care delivery.

  • Identifies, analyzes and develops recommendations on performance improvement variances and opportunities.

  • Identifies, analyzes and develops recommendations for new business opportunities

  • Fosters system thinking within service line teams

  • Collects and distributes monthly reports on outcomes and operational performance.

  • Works collaboratively with service line teams, physicians and all department managers to set appropriate financial volume and cost targets and monitors same.

  • Integrates PI principles throughout teams. Establishes performance outcomes for service line and new patient care ventures, monitors performance outcomes and evaluates improvement(s) to plans on a continual basis

  • Responsible to share in, and support, initiatives aimed at community benefit, outreach and reputation of system.

  • Works in partnership with referrals sources and others to achieve system strategies, tactics and patient care excellence.


  • Registered Nurse with Master of Science Degree in Nursing or other relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Licensed as an RN in the State of Michigan.

  • Professional certification in nursing administration or other relevant management or applicable specialties.

  • Five (5) years of management experience in the PeriOperative arena with progressive responsibility and authority.

  • Three (3) years of clinical experience in PeriOperative Nursing.

  • BCLS certification
