The NICU Qualified Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) maintains competency to care for patients in all areas of the hospital, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU RRT attends high risk newborn deliveries as part of the Delivery Response Team, and also assists with external NICU transports as a member of the Neonatal Transport Team.


Successful completion of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) exam through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required. Associates Degree preferred.

Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) through the NBRC is preferred.

Licensed Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan is required.

Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) certification is required.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is preferred.


This position is under the direct supervision of the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinators. It reports to, and is indirectly supervised, by the Respiratory Care Manager.

Works collaboratively with the Respiratory Care and other patient care teams.

  5. Maintains competency and is able to function as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in the Respiratory Care Department.

  6. Maintains competency and performs all respiratory care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) including invasive and non-invasive ventilation, high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), high and low flow oxygen delivery and therapeutic treatments.

  7. Attends high-risk deliveries in the Maternity Department to provide infant resuscitation and airway care. Following NRP certification and competency assessment may perform infant intubation.

  8. As a member of the NICU Transport Team, assists with the external transport of critically ill neonates via ambulance and/or fixed-wing or helicopter.

  9. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
