Graduate of an approved Surgical Technology Training Program
Certification required (C.S.T.).
Supervised by the Maternity Manager, Maternity Coordinators or designee.
Works under the supervision of the registered nurse in delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period.
Works collaboratively and effectively with all members of the Patient Care Team.

Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the application of principles of asepsis and infection control.
Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques.
Sets up sterile field and maintains according to department specific guidelines.
Follows all department policies/procedures/guidelines relevant to intraoperative patient care procedures.
Assisting surgeon during a procedure when requested and under direct supervision includes:
Holds retractors placed by surgeon.
Cauterizes instrument placed by surgeon.
Passes and places ties at the surgeon’s request.
May assist the circulating nurse in the following manner:
Assists in moving the patient to and from the surgical bed.
Assists in positioning and prepping of patient for the procedure.
Cleans and prepares instruments for flash sterilization.
Assists in the application and securing of dressings and casts.
Keeps surgeon’s preference lists up-to-date.
Has knowledge of where all supplies and equipment can be located in the department.
Performs within the parameters outlined in the surgical technologist performance standards.
Acts as a preceptor for new department employees or students.
Performs duties of supplying and restocking unit items. Performs housekeeping duties in lieu of housekeeping staff; performs cleaning tasks on specific equipment following manufacturers and hospital guidelines. Cleans and reorders instruments and maintains par levels.
Maintains quality controls and monitors compliance with quality assurance requirements as assigned.
Assists with the medication storage, stocking, transportation, and checking of expiration dates as delegated.
Uses critical thinking skills and exercises prudent judgment in responding to crisis situations. Has clear understanding of scrub performance and can respond, set up Operating Room and assist doctor in most expedient manner in crisis situation.
Utilizes department tools for documentation according to established guidelines. Uses only hospital-approved abbreviations. Writes legibly at all times.
Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills, including but not limited to: V/S, newborn hearing screenings, direct patient care under RN supervision, surgical scrubbing, assisting with circumcision set up and care, and unit clerk clerical functions.
Assumes all unit clerk duties as a relief staff.
Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
